A year of historic firsts
Decatur County PRIDE started the summer on a positive note. We announced our presence to most of the County by participating in the 4H Fair Parade. This was the first time an inclusion organization has ever participated in any community activity. The reception from the general community was mostly positive and the parade committee sincerely looks forward to the next parade.
In late July DCP joined the Greensburg Decatur County Chamber of Commerce as a means of normalizing relationships between the organization and the general and business community.
We enthusiastically embarked on a campaign to improve the lives of LGBTQIA2S+ families in our county. We reached out via email to the Superintendent of Decatur County Community Schools, expressing our desire to become allies for the LGBTQIA2S+ children in our community. We were extremely pleased to have a productive meeting with Decatur County schools. The meeting exceeded our expectations, leaving us feeling optimistic and hopeful for a brighter future.
We never give up on our commitment to advocacy. Although we have encountered a challenge in scheduling meetings with two other groups in the community, we remain hopeful that we will soon be able to connect with them.
Although not everyone we have approached has been open to our message, the encouraging and supportive encounters we have had fill us with optimism and motivate us to continue championing for the rights and well-being of LGBTQIA2S+ individuals in our community.
On October 2nd we held our first peer to peer support group for parents of LGBTQIA2S+ people. In November we will also be holding our First meeting of Decatur County Pride Youth. A group where LGBTQIA2S+ youth and their allies can come together and just exist.
